Mohican Wilderness

This place has really improved over the past several years. There are 2 sides to ride on offering challenges on both sides. This place is a lung burner so don’t bother showing up if you don’t want to climb. The good news is that the awesome downhills are worth the effort.

The Trail
The North loop is accessed by turning right (west) out of the parking lot and veering left at the Y in the road. The trail starts about 50 feet further down on your right.
This section has a little of everything to offer. Technical bits, rollercoaster style singletrack, long grueling climbs, and bombastic downhills. Highlights include a semi-technical downhill with some light rock gardens and a short, steep climb on an old logging road. The end finishes off with a fun, fast rollercoaster style trail that’ll leave you wanting more. Length-4.5 miles
NOTE: between Memorial Day and Labor Day (8pm-6pm), only part of North loop is open due to horse traffic. This is clearly marked on the trail.

The South side begins directly across the street from the parking lot and starts with one long, grueling climb up the grassy hill and into the pines. This is the longest climb in Ohio. You will find a cot rental at the top J Ryan has leveled this out more and made it not as steep but longer and more gradual. So basically your pain is drawn out longer but isn’t as intense J Once at the top you have the satisfaction of knowing that the rest of the loop is basically downhill. On the downhill you will experience some radically cool rock gardens, some killer switchbacks, and a technical, loose, rocky, section that’ll make you wish for a bigger insurance policy. This downhill lasts for a couple of miles and is a blast! The climbing is totally worth the fun on the downhill. Length 4.0 miles.

 The Flow
Very good flow to the trail overall. Since there is a lot of gradual climbing here it seems a good rhythm is never hard to achieve. Some tighter sections can challenge you but you can keep your momentum through most of the sections. The flow only becomes an issue in the rock gardens where technical skill and pedaling are required to keep your momentum.

Trail Condition
Mohican is one of the best places to ride when wet. This trail stays in excellent shape. There are no big ruts or visible signs of erosion. The trail could be marked a little better. Ryan has told me that he has done some recent work to make the trail better marked.

Trail Design
Excellent trail design. Like I stated previously, this trail just keeps getting better and better every time I go back. The hilly terrain is fully taken advantage of.

In the near future there are plans to expand the trail to the other side of the Mohican River including a 200 ft. suspension bridge and under a rock cliff. The downhill course is in the works now and will be finished very soon.
