Looking to migrate my retro commuter over from the harder to find 27" wheels/tires to the more modern 700cc size. Since this is for a beater commuter that has a high percentage chance of being stolen while I work (downtown Cincinnati), I really don't want to shell out $$$ for a new wheelset from my LBS or JensonUSA.

The hope is that somebody has an old 7 or 8 speed wheelset (or 9 or 10, I don't care!) that is collecting dust in their garage or taking up space in their closet. Not to sound too picky, but please don't kill me! I'm commuting 15 miles (round trip) to work via some large NKY hills, so I need something that's not an accident waiting to happen (ala lockup/blowup at 35 mph).

So please help a brother out. I am also using this bike to train for the Lymphoma & Leukemia Society's "Team-in-Training" charity century event out in Tuscon, AZ this November. The old 700cc wheelset you are using as a doorstop would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! :D

I have a set of RSX/Mavic wheels with a 7speed cassette and tires. I would sell them for $75 but the shipping would kill you. (Maybe another $20 to $25 ??) I have a few other parts lying around as well.

Are any of those "other parts" indexed shifters? My bike is an old-school "10 speed"- that's two chainrings and a 5 speed cassette out back. I'm fine with the 5 speed cassette, but would really like to eventually move it over to something indexed and not on the stem. The idea of hitting a pothole at 25+ mph while one hand is trying to finesse my stem mounted friction shifters is not something I relish...

Are you looking for any trades? I have a rear MTB disc wheel by WTB, including tire, tube, spacers and a 16T SS cog. Also have a Truvativ crankset (?T ring + bash) w/external BB if you're interested. Let me know what you've got and what you need.

I have the Alex wheels that came on my trek 1000. They were pretty bombproof for the 6 months i rode them. Just like before the shipping would kill you.
May we never forget what should be remembered, and may we not remember that which is best forgot.

On the OMBA board I just solved that for a guy looking for some old MTB friction shifters. I found a co-worker that lives up in Beaver Creek to courier them up almost to Enon, where the guy who needs them lives. Is there any way, given the SJ rides or other such events, that we could get a wheelset down at least closer to Cincinnati? People are already spending the gas to drive to the trailhead and back, can't imagine a road wheelset would noticeably weigh down the car ;).

Yeah, I have a couple of index shifters and brake levers. A pretty well worn Sora triple crankset, I think i have both dérailleurs and a a campy bottom bracket. I also have a set of 600/utlegra brakes, but I think they are "long reach" or something because the didn't fit my bike. That's all I can think of right now, but I'll look this afternoon.

I guess I was thinking if you needed more stuff, it might make it worth while to ship the stuff.

I don't really need the wheel or crank right now, but I'll see if I can think of anyone who does.

BTW, here's the info about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Cycling Team-In-Training Program, and here's the bit specifically about the El Tour de Tucson Charity Century. It'll be my first century ride/race, but it looks like a lot of fun. high milage along the Little Miami Scenic Rail-trail is fun anyway, so why should Arizona be any different?

Oh yea, I also have a Thule 4 bike rack for a 2" hitch to trade as well. I think it was an Expressway or something like that.

Check that, the shifters and crank are 2x7. The right side is a newer low-end 7-speed shifter and the left is a RSX shifter. Crank is a double.

I can get to MSP sometime.

I don't need a rack right now either.
